How to turn off new Instagram Last Active feature

With over 800 million monthly active users and 500 million daily active users, Instagram has become something of a social media powerhouse.

Since it was acquired by Facebook in 2012, Instagram,  like other social media platforms has been very busy developing and rolling out new features in a quest to keep and grow its users base.

A feature we’ve been watching develop on Instagram is that of DM (Direct Messages).

Users have been able to direct message each other via the platform now for some time. But a new feature has appeared which allows you to see when your Instagram friend was last active on the platform or if you are active right now

So how does the last active feature work?

Well on Instagram when you send someone you’re friends with a message (DM) – when they read the message you will see a read receipt (seen) basically letting you know that your message has been read. And by whom.

Unlike other platforms presently, with Instagram, there is no way to turn this off.

In your direct message box in Instagram, you will now see the people you previously messaged and additional – when they were last active.  It will also show if that particular user is active now (live).

The screenshot below shows you how it works & what you are looking out for;

Can I turn off ‘last active’?

Yes   – Unlike not being able to turn off those pesky read receipts on Instagram, users do have the ability to turn off ‘activity status’.

Instagram do point out that once you turn this off you won’t be able to see the activity status of other accounts.

  • Go into your profile and tap on the settings
  • Scroll down to ‘Show activity status’
  • Toggle on or off based on your preferences

That’s pretty much it – privacy settings within social media platforms and apps are important.  It’s a good idea to regularly review your settings to make sure you have them set to a level you’re comfortable with.  Cuts out that annoying pressure to talk or reply immediately and gives you just that bit more privacy.
