Locket App: What Parents Need to Know about Photo Sharing Safety
In the world of photo sharing apps there always seems to be a new kid on the block. Sharing pictures on Snapchat or Instagram is pretty common these days, but a new app called Locket adds an interesting twist.
Locket uses the widget feature on iPhone and Android devices to send photos and videos straight to someone’s home screen. Think of it like your calendar widget which shows the date without needing to open anything. Locket does the same for photos.

👉 So how does it work?
1️⃣ Download the app for iOS or Android
2️⃣ Create an account using your phone number
3️⃣ Pick up to ten best friends by searching your contacts or sharing your Locket link
4️⃣ Add the Locket widget to your home screen
5️⃣ Photos from friends appear instantly on your widget
6️⃣ Tap the widget to take and send a photo straight back
👀 What do parents and caregivers need to know?
Locket has become popular with young people as a simple way to share photos. There is no public feed, no public map and it is limited to twenty friends for now. Locket does not include a chat feature but teens can add text to the photos and videos they send.
⚠️ What about the risks?
A key concern with any photo sharing app is how user content is handled. In the Locket terms of service the company explains that users give them permission to copy, display, distribute and store content in connection with the service.

📌 In simple terms this means you still own your photos, but the company has very wide permission to use them. Many young people and adults may not realise this when they sign up.
There are no parental safety tools or privacy settings in Locket. A young person could also receive inappropriate images because photos appear instantly on the widget without extra permission.
Another important point is that once an image is sent it cannot be retrieved. The other person will have access to it in their photo history and on their widget. Once it is sent there is no way to take it back.
💬 Final thoughts for parents and caregivers
As with any app, having the right information helps parents make informed decisions and start open conversations. Talking about privacy, how we share images, and how data can be used by technology platforms is always important.
Most of all, we want young people to feel confident and supported so they always know they can speak to a parent or another trusted adult about anything that is worrying them.
