How to Reset Meta AI on WhatsApp, Facebook & Instagram
If you use WhatsApp, you may have noticed a new feature appearing recently a colourful, circular icon sitting inside your chats.
This is Meta’s AI-powered assistant, designed to answer questions, generate images, and offer recommendations directly within WhatsApp. Similar versions of this AI are also appearing across Facebook and Instagram.
For many people, it’s popped up quietly, without much explanation and that’s where some understandable questions come in.
What is it doing?
Can you remove it?
And what happens to the conversations you have with it?
Let’s break this down as this sort of stuff can be sometimes difficult to wrap our heads around.
Can You Remove the AI from WhatsApp, Facebook, or Instagram?
Good question and the short answer is No. At the time of writing, there doesn’t appear to be a way to fully remove or disable Meta’s AI assistant from WhatsApp, Facebook, or Instagram.
The icon stays there.
However and this is the important part you can reset the AI and delete its copy of your conversation.
That’s a small but meaningful bit of control that many users aren’t aware of (my step by step video below explains more)
How to Reset Meta AI (WhatsApp, Facebook & Instagram)
The process is the same across all three platforms.
Step-by-step:
Tap on the AI assistant icon
In the message box, type:
/reset-ai
Send the message
You’ll then receive a confirmation message stating:
“The AI will be reset to its default state. The AI’s copy of this conversation will be deleted from Meta’s servers.”
That’s it.
No menus.
No hidden settings.
Just a simple command.
Why Is This Useful to Know?
On the surface, this might feel like a small thing you can do but it’s actually quite important.
Here’s why.
1. We Don’t Always Think Before We Ask
AI tools encourage curiosity.
People test them, explore ideas, and ask questions they might not normally type into a search engine.
Sometimes that’s harmless curiosity.
Sometimes it’s personal.
Sometimes it’s just something you didn’t really mean to store anywhere.
Resetting the AI lets you clear that interaction and start fresh.
2. It Gives You a Bit More Control
Even though you can’t remove the AI entirely, knowing how to reset it gives you:
More awareness of how the tool works
More confidence using it (or choosing not to)
A simple way to manage what’s retained
Digital literacy isn’t about knowing everything. It’s about knowing what choices you have and how to use them.
3. It’s Helpful for Parents and Families
For parents and carers, this is also useful information to have conversations with young people.
Many teens will experiment with AI tools out of curiosity especially when they’re built into apps they already use daily such as Snapchat
Knowing how to reset the AI:
Encourages open conversations about privacy
Reinforces the idea of “cleaning up” digital spaces
Helps normalise reviewing and managing settings regularly
That’s why staying informed matters. Not so we feel overwhelmed, but so we feel confident — confident enough to understand the tools, to make small practical choices, and to have open, ongoing conversations with young people about how technology fits into their lives.
It’s not about knowing everything. It’s about knowing enough to ask the right questions — and to guide, support, and check in along the way.
