This offers parents and caregivers access to some parental controls on the platform.<\/p>\n<p>Well not to be outdone, it should come as no surprise that Snapchat would follow suit and offer some parental controls to parents.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mTMpFFymN3A\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><br \/>\nOver the years we\u2019ve spoken to our fair share of parents and caregivers who have had concerns and issues with Snapchat. Sometimes, for many, it can be an afterthought which only gets attention when things go wrong. As we know when it comes to social media it\u2019s been going wrong a lot.<\/p>\n<p>According to an article in The Verge recently <em>\u2018Snapchat to let parents see who their kids are chatting with in app\u2019.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/em>The article mentions that \u2018As part of Snap\u2019s child safety efforts, Snapchat is launching a new supervision tool on Tuesday that the company says mimics how parents and teenagers interact in the real world\u2019. Okay then.<\/p>\n<p>This feature is the first of a number of tools Snapchat is rolling out for parents as part of Snapchat\u2019s new \u2018Family Center\u2019.\u00a0 This offers parents the ability to see their child\u2019s friends list as well as a list of accounts they\u2019ve interacted with over the last seven days and the ability to report any concerning accounts to Snap\u2019s Trust and Safety Team.<\/p>\n<p><strong>However children and teenagers can leave the \u2018Family Centre\u2019 group. And they will. You\u00a0 will receive a notification.\u00a0 But surely the mighty Snapchat could find a solution for this &#8211; to stop them leaving?. Baffling. So again parents it\u2019s up to you to let your children know that Family Centre is a condition of using the app and phone. That you pay for. <\/strong><strong>\ud83d\ude0a<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h1><strong>WILL THIS FEATURE BE HELPFUL TO PARENTS AND CARERS? <\/strong><\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/snap.com\/en-GB\/safety\/family-center\">According to the official blog over on the Snapchat website \u2018Family Center<\/a> is designed to reflect the way that parents engage with their teens in the real world, where parents usually know who their teens are friends with and when they are hanging out \u2013 but don\u2019t eavesdrop on their private conversations\u2019<\/p>\n<p>This feature is likely to work best with children and younger teenagers.\u00a0 Teenagers 14-16+ who have shown maturity generally can be rewarded with digital agency when showing that they can use apps like Snapchat and TikTok safely, responsibly and productively.<\/p>\n<p>Also keep in mind what we mentioned earlier in relation to how the feature works \u2013 it will only show who the child\u2019s friends are and who they have messaged, It does not show the content of the snap, the message text itself or pictures.<\/p>\n<p>Many children and young people do accept friend requests from people they don\u2019t know. This is a concern.\u00a0 While this might show some account names which you don\u2019t or they don\u2019t recognise, many users on Snapchat don\u2019t in fact use their real name as part of the username.
